Olufunlayo (Funmi) Bammeke, Ph.D. is a Professor of Sociology. Her academic and research interests have centred primarily on gender & development and child/youth studies, especially abuse and deprivation. She has taught and researched these areas for nearly three decades at the University of Lagos. She obtained her first degree from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University.) and her Master’s and Doctoral degrees from the University of Lagos. She also holds a postgraduate diploma in Journalism. She has had the privilege of international training which has enhanced her capacity in her areas of interest. She is a laureate of the Gender Institute of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) in Dakar, Senegal, and a two-time laureate of The African Gender Institute, University of Cape Town, South Africa. She has been a visiting scholar at the University of Ghana, Legon, Ghana. Prof. Bammeke has collaborated with colleagues in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, and the USA to undertake studies on childhood maltreatment, adolescent abuse, relationship/partner violence, and the implications of household headship for children’s education among others. She is well-published locally and internationally. She is an external examiner to some universities within and outside Nigeria. Professor Bammeke believes in equal opportunity and protection for all children regardless of gender. She belongs to the board of three organizations committed to the welfare and future of vulnerable children and young adults. She is the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lagos. Outside academics and research, Prof. Bammeke loves counselling. She coordinates the children and teenagers of her local church.
